About this worksheet

Sorting is the first step of working with data: before children can count or graph, they have to decide which things belong together. A group can be animals, fruit, vehicles, clothes or toys, and a child who can say what a group is called is already classifying. On this page every item is the same job. Three or four pictures sit in a row, and all but one belong to the same group, and the child circles the one that does not belong.

No words are printed, so the child names each picture aloud and decides. Support sheets use three pictures from groups every child knows. Challenge sheets use four pictures, where two groups look a little alike, such as fruit and plants. After the page, ask the child to say how the other pictures are alike, because a group is a rule, not a list. Then sort laundry, blocks or snacks at home.

What your child will learn

  • Name the group a set of pictures belongs to
  • Find the picture that does not belong
  • Say how things in a group are alike
  • Sort objects into categories

Common Core standard: K.MD.B.3

Worked example

The pictures show an apple, a pear and a car. An apple and a pear are fruit, and a car is not, so circle the car.

Common mistake

Choosing the picture the child likes least or finds odd in color or size, instead of the one that belongs to a different group.

Helpful hint

Say the name of each picture. Which two are the same kind of thing?
