Counting out a number of things is different from counting a group that is already there. To color three pictures out of five, a child has to say the numbers, color one picture for each number word and then stop. Stopping is the hard part: many children keep going to the end of the row. Each row on this page has the same picture repeated and a number to color.
Say the number words together as the crayon moves, and ask how many are colored at the end. The first sheets use rows of five; the last use rows of ten. If a child colors too many, count the colored pictures together and talk about which ones to leave white.

The row has five stars and the page says to color 3. Say one, color a star; two, color a star; three, color a star. Stop. The last two stars stay white.
Coloring the whole row, or counting a picture twice, so the last number said is not the number asked for.
Say one number for each picture you color, and stop at the number.
