Long i and long u can be spelled in several ways, which is why they are some of the hardest vowel sounds for a second grader to spell. The long i sound is written igh in night, ie in pie and y in fly. The long u sound is written ue in blue and ew in new. This worksheet prints a box of the teams at the top, and below it ten words in letter boxes with the team left out.
A short clue under each word tells what it means, so the child can work out the word and then write the team that makes it. Ask your child to say the word slowly, listen for the long vowel, and look at the box to see which team fits the word.
