About this worksheet
Fourth graders are expected to read a paragraph and decide what the whole text is mostly saying, not just remember one interesting fact. This is harder than it looks because a detail can be true and still be too small to name the main idea. Another answer may sound important but be so broad that it could fit almost any passage. This worksheet gives children short passages with close answer choices, so they must weigh the whole text against each option. A parent should watch for children who choose the first fact they remember instead of checking whether every sentence points toward that idea. Ask your child to prove the main idea with two details from the passage. If the details do not support it, the answer needs to change.
