About this worksheet
Text structure is the way an author organizes ideas so the reader can follow them. Fourth graders need to recognize more than a topic. They should notice whether the author is showing a cause and effect, describing a problem and solution, comparing two things, or moving through time. This worksheet asks children to name the structure and point to the signal details that prove it. The hard part is that passages can include more than one clue, but one structure usually does the main work. A parent should ask, How are the ideas connected? If the child answers with only what the passage is about, reread for words such as because, after, instead, both, problem, or solution. Those connections reveal the organization.
