About this worksheet
Context clues help readers figure out an unfamiliar word by using the sentence and the surrounding ideas. Fourth graders often know that they should look around the word, but they may grab a nearby word without checking whether the meaning fits. This worksheet makes that reasoning visible. Each item asks children to infer a word meaning, choose the clue that helped, or test whether a replacement word keeps the sentence sensible. The words are embedded in real passage sentences, so students cannot solve the page by memorizing vocabulary definitions alone. When reviewing, ask your child to reread the sentence with the chosen meaning inserted. If the sentence sounds wrong or contradicts the next detail, the context was not used carefully enough.
What your child will learn
Infer word meanings from nearby clues
Use examples and contrasts in a sentence
Check that a meaning fits the passage
Explain which words helped you decide
Worked example
If buds are tight in March but later open into leaves, tight means closed closely, not hard to understand.
Common mistake
Choosing a familiar meaning of the word even when it does not fit the sentence.
Helpful hint
Replace the word with your answer and reread the sentence.
