About this worksheet

Many words have more than one meaning: a bat can be a flying animal or a stick for hitting a ball, and a spring can be a season or a coil of metal. The words around it tell the reader which meaning is meant. On this fifth grade sheet a child reads eight sentences, each with one word shown in brackets, and circles the meaning that fits the sentence.

Each version has different sentences, and the answer key gives every meaning.

What your child will learn

  • Know that one word can have two meanings
  • Use the other words in the sentence as clues
  • Choose the meaning that makes sense
  • Read the whole sentence before deciding

Common Core standard: L.5.4.A

Worked example

In 'Tom swung the bat and hit the ball', bat means a stick used to hit a ball, not a flying animal.
