Knowing the name of a letter is the first step toward reading and writing it. A child who can find the letter M in a crowd of letters has learned that the same letter can look different, as a capital M or a small m. On this page every row shows a few letters, and the child circles the one that is named at the top of the row. The named letter appears once in each row, sometimes as a capital and sometimes as a small letter, among other letters that are chosen to look a little like it, such as b, d, p and q.
Say the letter name out loud before circling, and run a finger along the row. Support sheets have four letters in a row, standard sheets have five, and challenge sheets have six. After the page, hunt for the same letters on cereal boxes and street signs.
