About this worksheet

Knowing a letter name is not the same as knowing the sound that letter represents in a word. Kindergarten children often recognise an M on a page yet cannot pull apart moon to hear /m/, or they add an extra vowel and say ‘muh’ instead of the clean sound. This worksheet moves between a printed letter, a familiar spoken word, and another word with the same sound. The questions include first sounds and final sounds so children learn to listen at both edges of a word. Read the prompt and choices aloud when needed; the aim is sound matching, not independent reading. Watch for guesses based on meaning, such as pairing moon with star instead of map. Ask your child to stretch only the target sound, compare each choice, and then say the whole word normally. Challenge items draw from a wider range of consonants, while support items stay with highly distinct, easy-to-hear sounds.
