Short vowels sit in the middle of many first words children learn to read, yet those sounds can be difficult to separate from the consonants around them. A child may blend cat correctly from memory but hesitate when asked whether the middle sound is /a/ or /e/. This worksheet keeps every target word to a familiar three-letter pattern and rotates among hearing the middle sound, choosing another word with the same vowel, and filling a blank sound box. Read each word aloud without naming the answer. The child should say it slowly, notice the mouth sound in the middle, and then compare the choices.
