About this worksheet

A word family is a group of words that end the same way: bat, mat and hat all end in -at, and pan, man and fan all end in -an. Once a child knows the ending, only the first letter changes, so one ending unlocks many words. This worksheet shows a picture, the end of its word, such as at or an, and a short line where the first letter goes. A bank of letters sits at the top of the page, and each one is used for a word below.

Say the picture's name slowly, listen for the first sound, then pick the letter that makes it. The sheet mixes four endings: -at, -an, -ap and -ag, with a different set of six words on each version. After the page, make up silly rhyming sentences with the family: the fat cat sat on the mat.
