About this worksheet

Before a child can read a story they can follow one, and following one is the skill this page works on. An adult reads three short sentences aloud while the child looks at the picture that goes with them, and every answer is given by pointing at a picture. The first level asks what happened at the very start, which is the hardest thing to hold onto because the picture usually shows how the story ended. The second asks about a detail from the middle, so the child has to keep more than one thing in mind. The third asks what happens after the last sentence, which is not on the page at all and has to be worked out: the bridge is finished, so something is going to drive across it. Read slowly, point along the row of pictures, and let the child say what they remember before the choices are offered. Reading it a second time is not cheating; it is how a story is meant to be heard.
