Preschool Reading Worksheet

Circle the letter that each picture ends with.

Most children hear the first sound of a word long before they hear the last one, so this page turns the ear to the end. Each box shows one big picture and three small letters, and the child circles the letter the picture's name ends with: hat ends with t, pig ends with g, sun ends with n. Say the picture's name slowly and stretch the last sound, caaat, then say it again and stop on the final sound.
A child who circles the first letter of the word is listening to the wrong end, which is a good thing to notice and talk about, because both ends of a word matter for reading. The words here end in one clear sound; words that end with a silent e or a double letter wait for later. Say the sound, not the letter name.
Head Start ELOF standard: P-LIT 1, RF.K.2.D
The picture shows a sun. Say it slowly: sss-uuu-nnn. The last sound is nnn, so circle the letter n.
Circling the first letter of the word, because the front of a word is the part children hear first.
Say the name slowly and listen to the very last sound.
