Vocabulary at this age is mostly words a child understands before they can produce them, and the way to see it is to say a word and watch where the finger goes. Every item here is a row of pictures and something an adult says aloud; nothing on the page needs to be read. The first level simply names the object, which shows whether the word is there at all. The second gives a clue about what the thing does instead of naming it, so the child has to work from meaning: the one you drink from, the one that opens a lock. The third puts four things from a single group side by side and separates them with one property, so it is no longer enough to know that all four are animals; the child has to know which of them gives us milk.
