About this worksheet

Earth is made of layers, like a peach with a skin, a thick fruit and a pit. The outside layer, the crust, is thin and rocky, and we live on it. Under it is the mantle, the thickest layer, made of hot rock that moves very slowly. Below that is the outer core, a layer of hot liquid metal, and at the center is the inner core, a solid ball of metal that is the hottest part of the planet.

On this worksheet your child reads a clue about one layer and writes its name; the four names are in the instruction. Building Confidence uses the plainest clues, On Level adds clues about magma and plates, and Challenge Me uses clues about magnetism and pressure. Draw the layers as a ball cut in half and label them together.

What your child will learn

  • Name the four layers of Earth in order from the outside
  • Say what each layer is made of
  • Tell the solid layers from the liquid layer

NGSS standard: 3-ESS2-2

Worked example

The thin, rocky layer where we live is the crust. The thick layer under it, made of slowly moving hot rock, is the mantle.

Common mistake

Mixing up the cores: the outer core is liquid, and the inner core is solid.

Helpful hint

From outside to center: crust, mantle, outer core, inner core.
