Scientists sort animals into groups by what they look like and how they live. A bird has feathers and wings. A mammal has fur or hair and feeds its babies milk, which is true of a cat, a cow and a bear. An insect is small and has six legs, such as a bee or an ant. A fish lives in water and swims with fins. On this page each question names one group and shows a few animals, and the child circles the one that belongs to the group.
Every question has exactly one right picture, and the other animals belong to other groups. Say the name of each animal out loud first, then think about its covering, its legs and where it lives. Talk about animals at the park or on a walk afterwards: is it a bird, an insect or a mammal?

The question says Circle the bird. The pictures are a cat, a duck and a bee. A duck has feathers and wings, so circle the duck.
Calling every animal that flies a bird, so a bee or a butterfly is circled for the bird question.
Think about what covers the animal and how many legs it has.
