Needs support health and safety, while wants add comfort or enjoyment without being required for survival. First graders often label a strongly desired object a need because the feeling is real, or assume an item always belongs in one category without considering context. A coat is especially important in snow; a second fancy pair of shoes remains optional. This worksheet sorts concrete examples, explains the reason for each category, and asks children to make a priority choice when money, time, or space is limited. Support questions use obvious examples. Harder questions add context and require an explanation rather than a label alone. Watch for moral judgments: wanting a toy is not wrong. The economic idea is that resources are limited, so people compare choices and usually meet essential needs before optional wants.
