About this worksheet

In a democracy, people choose their leaders by voting. An election is the time when people vote. Each person who is allowed to vote gets one vote, and the choice with the most votes wins. A ballot is the paper or screen used to cast a vote, and a polling place is the place where people go to vote. A candidate is a person who is trying to win. Americans vote for leaders at every level: a mayor for a town, a governor for a state and a president for the whole country.

Children vote too, on things such as a class pet or a game for recess. Voting teaches that everyone's choice counts, and that we accept a fair result even when we do not win. This worksheet gives six questions about voting. Ask your child to tell about a time they voted.

What your child will learn
