About this worksheet

Long ago, people got what they needed by trading: one person gave something they had for something they wanted. Money made trading easier. In the United States, money comes as coins, such as the penny, nickel, dime and quarter, and as paper bills, such as the one-dollar bill. People can also pay with a check, which tells a bank to pay money, or with a credit card or a debit card.

A receipt shows what was paid, and change is money given back when someone pays more than the price. A bank keeps money safe, and a loan is money that someone borrows and pays back. This worksheet gives six questions about trading and ways to pay. Ask your child to count the coins in a pocket or jar and say which ways of paying your family uses.

What your child will learn

  • Tell trading from buying
  • Name coins, bills, checks and cards
  • Say what a receipt, change and a bank are
