About this worksheet

In a market, the price of a good depends on supply, which is how much of it there is to sell, and demand, which is how many people want to buy it. When a good is scarce or when many people want it, its price tends to rise; when there is plenty of it or few people want it, the price tends to fall.

On this fifth grade sheet a child reads twelve short stories about goods in a store and circles whether the price will probably go up or go down. Every version has different goods and stories, and the answer key gives every answer.

What your child will learn

  • Know what supply and demand mean
  • See that less supply raises the price
  • See that more demand raises the price
  • See that more supply or less demand lowers the price

C3 Framework standard: D2.Eco.8.3-5

Worked example

A storm ruined most of the apples, so there are very few to sell. When supply goes down, the price goes up.

Common mistake

Thinking a good with a lot of buyers gets cheaper, when more demand pushes the price up.

Helpful hint

Ask two questions: is there more or less to sell, and do more or fewer people want it?
