About this worksheet

A map is a drawing of a place seen from above, and the compass rose tells you which way is north, south, east and west. This fifth grade sheet shows one small town map with a compass rose and asks eight questions of the same kind: what direction is one place from another? Some answers are the four main directions and some are in between, such as northeast or southwest, so a child has to look from one place to the other and not just guess.

Each version uses a different town and different questions, and the answer key gives the direction for every question.

What your child will learn

  • Use a compass rose
  • Name the four main directions
  • Name the in-between directions
  • Read where places are on a map

C3 Framework standard: D2.Geo.2.3-5

Common mistake

Reading the direction from the wrong place, so the answer is turned around: it is the second place that you describe from the first.
