About this worksheet

A map is a small representation of places and their positions. Kindergarten children first understand maps through familiar landmarks such as home, school, a park, and a store. They may recognise every symbol but still confuse the map with a picture of what a street literally looks like, or turn the page and lose track of direction. This worksheet uses the same five-position layout in varied arrangements so children can practise above, below, left, right, north, south, east, and west. Support items use everyday position words and do not require a compass. Standard items show a compass and name one direction. Challenge items follow two short moves across the map. Every answer comes from the actual labelled features and coordinates shown. Watch whether your child starts from the named landmark before moving; beginning at the wrong place makes an otherwise correct direction lead to the wrong answer.

What your child will learn

  • Understand that a map represents where places are
  • Use above, below, left, and right on a map
  • Read north, south, east, and west from a compass
  • Follow a short route between familiar landmarks

Worked example

If School is above Home, the compass shows that School is north of Home. Start at Home before tracing the direction.

Common mistake

Moving from whichever symbol catches the eye instead of beginning at the place named in the question.

Helpful hint

Touch the starting place, then move one direction at a time.
