About this worksheet
A consonant digraph uses two letters to represent one sound, which makes it fundamentally different from a blend. In ship, S and H work together as /sh/; a child should not try to pronounce each letter separately. First graders may reverse the pair, use only one letter, or confuse CH with SH because both sounds are made near the front of the mouth. This page gives each common digraph its own word bank and rotates between recognition, completion, and full-word production. Support items leave the surrounding letters visible and reduce the number of choices. Harder versions expect children to recall the complete spelling from a meaning clue. Watch whether your child taps once or twice for the digraph. It represents one sound even though it needs two boxes. Comparing the spoken sound with the written pair helps prevent these words from being treated like ordinary blends.
What your child will learn

Spell common beginning and ending digraphs
Distinguish digraphs from blends
Keep digraph letters in conventional order
Worked example

Common mistake
Writing one letter for a digraph because only one sound is heard.
Helpful hint
Tap once for the sound, then remember that the sound needs two letters.
