About this worksheet
Suffixes are word parts added to the end of a base word. They can change meaning, tense, or the way a word is used in a sentence. Second graders often hear the ending but spell it loosely, or they attach a suffix without noticing the base word. This worksheet keeps suffix spelling and meaning together. Students identify a suffix, build a word from a base, choose the meaning of the suffixed word, and spell the complete word from a clue. The word bank is separate from the prefix worksheet so students must attend to the ending, not just any added word part. Support versions use choices and visible boxes. Standard and challenge versions ask for more independent spelling. Encourage your child to read the base first, then ask what the ending adds.
What your child will learn

Join a suffix to a base word
Use suffix meaning to understand a word
Spell endings such as ful, less, ly, ed, and ing
Worked example
Helpful is help plus ful, so it means full of help.
Common mistake
Looking only at the first part of the word and ignoring the ending.
Helpful hint
Read the base word, then explain what the suffix adds.
