About this worksheet
Vowel teams ask children to remember that two vowel letters can work together to spell one vowel sound. This is harder than simply listening for a sound, because the same long sound may have several spellings. Second graders often write ran for rain, bote for boat, or confuse ee and ea. This worksheet targets vowel teams directly with a separate word bank from the short-and-long-vowel page. Students supply the missing team, choose a correct spelling from a meaning clue, identify the team inside a word, and compare words that use the same pattern. Support versions keep more letters visible. Standard and challenge versions ask for whole-word spelling more often. Encourage your child to underline the two vowel letters and read them as one team before checking the rest of the word.
What your child will learn
Recognize common vowel teams
Spell words with two-letter vowel patterns
Connect a vowel team to one vowel sound
Avoid replacing a vowel team with one letter
Worked example
Rain uses ai. The two letters work together to spell the long a sound.
Common mistake
Writing only one vowel letter because the vowel team makes one sound.
