A good speller can see when a letter is missing from a word. This worksheet shows twelve words in letter boxes with one letter left out, and all twelve words belong to one theme, such as animals, food, school, weather, home or clothes. The theme is named in the instruction, which helps a child work out the word, and the child writes the missing letter in the empty box. The empty box can be at the beginning, in the middle or at the end of the word, so the child has to look at the whole word each time.
Ask your child to say the theme words aloud before starting, and then to read each word slowly with the missing letter filled in to check that it sounds right. A different theme comes with each version of the sheet, so the practice stays fresh.
Common Core standard: L.2.2.D
The theme is animals and the boxes show f, r, an empty box and g. The word is frog, so the empty box gets o.
