About this worksheet

Knowing what a word means is the heart of reading with understanding, and second graders add many new words every week from stories, science and talk. This worksheet gives six words, each with three possible meanings, and the child circles the meaning that fits. The words are ones children meet in books, such as borrow, gather, fragile and curious, and each meaning is a short plain phrase.

The wrong choices are meanings of other words, so the child cannot guess from the shape of the answer and has to know the word. Ask your child to say the word in a sentence of their own before choosing, and to cross out any meaning that clearly belongs to a different word. If a word is new, look for it in the book the family is reading this week.

What your child will learn

  • Choose the meaning that fits a word
  • Know new words from stories and school
  • Use a word in a sentence of your own

Common Core standard: L.2.4
