About this worksheet

Long words are easier to read when they are broken into syllables. Two patterns help a second grader decide where to break a word. When two consonants sit in the middle, as in rabbit and napkin, the break goes between them: rab-bit and nap-kin. Compound words break between the two small words: sun-set and pop-corn. When one consonant sits between two vowels, the break often comes before it, so the first vowel is long: ro-bot and ti-ger.

This worksheet shows ten words, each divided three ways with a hyphen, and the child circles the one that breaks the word between its syllables. Ask your child to say each choice in chunks and listen for the one that sounds like the real word.

What your child will learn

  • Divide a two-syllable word where the beat changes
  • Use the middle consonants to find the break
  • Say each chunk to check it

Common Core standard: RF.2.3.C

Worked example

The word is rabbit. The choices are ra-bbit, rab-bit and rabb-it. Rab-bit breaks between the two b's, so circle rab-bit.

Common mistake

Breaking a word after the first letter or in the middle of a vowel pair instead of between syllables.

Helpful hint

Say each choice in two chunks. Which one sounds like the word?
