About this worksheet
The short I sound appears in many early words, yet it is frequently confused with short E. A child may correctly hear the outside sounds in pig or sit and still choose the wrong vowel for the middle. This worksheet separates the three jobs involved in spelling: listening for the sound, locating its place, and recording the matching letter. Support pages leave only the vowel blank. Standard pages move the opening among all three boxes, while challenge pages include full word building from a spoken sound sequence. The range changes, but every item remains a short I CVC word. Encourage your child to keep the word stretched just long enough to hear the middle without changing it into the letter name I. After writing, blend from left to right and compare the spoken result with the target sounds. That habit builds independent checking rather than guessing.
What your child will learn
Distinguish short I from nearby vowels
Connect each sound with one letter box
Spell short I words in order
Check a spelling by blending
Worked example
For p - short I - g, place P first, I in the middle, and G last to make pig.
Common mistake
Writing E because short I and short E are not yet clearly separated.
