About this worksheet
Short O spelling asks children to hold the rounded middle sound while listening to the consonants on both sides. Because the letter name O differs from its short sound, some kindergartners choose a letter by name instead of sound. Others confuse short O with short U when a word is spoken quickly. This worksheet provides a visible box for every sound and changes how much of the spelling is supplied at each level. Support items focus on the vowel. Standard items may hide the first, middle, or final letter. Challenge items also ask children to build complete words from segmented sounds. Watch for one-to-one matching: one spoken part should lead to one box in these CVC words. Have your child blend the completed letters without pausing. If the spoken word changes, compare the middle sound first, since that is where most short O errors begin.
What your child will learn
Hear the short O sound
Place each letter in its correct box
Construct a full short O word
Read a finished spelling aloud
Worked example
Listen to d - short O - g. The letters D, O, G blend together as dog.
Common mistake
Using U because short O and short U sound close in some voices.
Helpful hint
Round your mouth for short O, then listen on each side.
