Preschool Spelling Worksheet

Circle the picture that starts with the letter S.

The letter S is one of the friendliest sounds to start with, because a child can stretch it out like a snake: sssss. That long, quiet hiss makes the very front of a word easy to hear, which is the whole skill on this page. Each row shows three pictures, and exactly one of them has a name that starts with S. Say the three names out loud together, slowly, and let the child decide which one begins with the hiss.
A child who picks a picture because it is a favorite, or because the whole name sounds long, is listening to the wrong part, so say only the first sound: sss. Words such as sun, sock, star and snake are the ones a three- or four-year-old already says every day. Praise the listening, not just the circle.

The row shows a ball, a sun and a cup. Say the names slowly and stretch the front of each one: sss-un starts with the hiss of S, so circle the sun.
