A complete sentence gives a reader a whole thought. In first grade, that usually means naming who or what the sentence is about and telling what that subject does. Children often write a strong naming phrase such as ‘the little dog’ and stop because the action is obvious in their picture. Others write ‘ran to the gate’ without naming who ran. This worksheet isolates both sentence parts before asking children to join and order them. Support pages use short subjects and actions. Standard and challenge pages add describing words, locations, or objects while keeping the same complete-sentence goal. Watch whether your child can explain what information a fragment is missing instead of relying only on how long it looks. A complete sentence can be very short, and a long group of words can still be unfinished. Encourage the child to read each choice aloud, then ask, ‘Who or what?’ and ‘What happened?’ before deciding.
