Describing words make nouns more exact by telling about color, size, texture, sound, taste, number, or condition. First graders sometimes choose an adjective because it is familiar rather than because it fits the noun, producing combinations such as ‘a barking blanket.’ They may also pile on many words that repeat the same idea. This worksheet asks children to select a fitting adjective, compare a plain sentence with a vivid revision, identify what the added words do, and reject mismatched descriptions. Support pages use one concrete quality such as color or size. Standard and challenge pages combine two compatible details, requiring the child to picture the noun and check both words. Encourage reading the phrase aloud and imagining the object. A useful description should help another person see, hear, feel, smell, or taste the noun more clearly. The aim is precision, not decoration; one exact adjective can improve a sentence more than three vague ones.
