About this worksheet

Forming letters correctly now saves a child from fixing bad habits later, and a printed page is the best place to learn them because the child feels the pencil move. On this grade 1 worksheet each line gives one letter as a solid model, then six dotted copies to trace, then an empty line to print it on. A sheet has three letters, each as a capital and as a small letter, and the six versions and three levels use different letters so the whole alphabet comes up.

Watch where each letter begins: most letters start at the top and go down, and the start dot shows where. Slow, careful letters are better than fast ones.

What your child will learn

  • Start each letter at the top
  • Trace capital and small letters
  • Print a letter on a line without a model
  • Match a capital letter to its small letter

Common Core standard: L.1.1.A

Worked example

Trace the dotted capital A: start at the top, go down to the left, then down to the right, then add the bar across. Then print your own A on the line.

Common mistake

Starting a letter at the bottom, or writing letters that float above the line.

Helpful hint

Put the pencil on the start dot and move slowly along the dotted line.
