Informative writing grows by adding true details that stay connected to the topic. First graders may include a favorite, a guess, or a fascinating fact about something else because all of those sentences sound interesting. This worksheet asks a more precise question: does the sentence teach accurate information about the subject named in the prompt? Children choose supporting facts, distinguish them from opinions, remove false statements, and identify why a detail belongs. Support topics use familiar animals and weather. Challenge topics include community jobs, light, and nests, but each fact remains short enough to evaluate without outside research. Explain that a fact can be checked with observation or a reliable source, while an opinion expresses a personal judgment. Accuracy matters as much as relevance; a sentence about frogs is not useful if it falsely says frogs have feathers. After each answer, ask your child to restate the topic and explain how the chosen fact adds something a reader can learn.
