A reason answers the reader’s question, ‘Why do you think that?’ First graders can usually state a favorite, but their explanation may repeat the claim or introduce an unrelated fact. ‘Apples are the best because I like apples’ adds little, while ‘Apples are easy to carry and eat’ gives useful support. This worksheet keeps the opinion visible and asks children to select a connected reason, complete a because sentence, compare relevant and irrelevant ideas, and identify what makes one reason stronger. Support pages use direct personal choices. Challenge pages include class projects and shared activities, so the reason must consider how the choice works for a group. The goal is logical connection, not proving that one preference is universally correct. Ask your child to read the claim, insert ‘because,’ and try each reason aloud. If the combined sentence makes sense and adds new information, the reason is doing its job.
