About this worksheet

Looking at a picture and writing a sentence about it is the first real piece of writing a child does on their own, because the ideas come from the picture and the child can put all their attention on spelling and punctuation. On this grade 1 worksheet each box shows a large picture with two lines below it, and your child writes a complete sentence: a capital letter at the start, a space between the words and an end mark at the finish.

Many sentences are right, so the answer key shows a sample. Before writing, ask your child to say the sentence out loud and count the words on their fingers.

What your child will learn

  • Say a whole idea before writing it
  • Start a sentence with a capital letter
  • Leave a space between words
  • End a sentence with a period

Common Core standard: L.1.1.J

Worked example

The picture shows a duck. A sentence is: A duck swims in the pond. It starts with a capital A and ends with a period.

Common mistake

Writing only the name of the thing in the picture, or forgetting the capital letter and the end mark.

Helpful hint

Say it first. Then write it with a capital letter at the start and an end mark at the end.
