About this worksheet

Writing about a book is one of the best ways to show that a child has understood what they read. A short book report asks for the facts about the book, such as its title and author, and then for the reader's own thinking: what the favorite part was, and why they liked it. This worksheet gives a labelled space for each part, so a second grader does not have to decide how to start or what to include.

The child chooses a book they know well, writes the title and the author, and then answers each question in a complete sentence with a capital letter and a period. The last box asks for a reason, which is the beginning of opinion writing. Ask your child to tell you about the book out loud first, and then to write what they said.

What your child will learn

  • Name the title and author of a book
  • Tell who is in a book and what happens
  • Give a reason for liking a book

Common Core standard: W.2.8

Worked example

Title: Charlotte's Web. Author: E. B. White. Who is in the book: Wilbur the pig and Charlotte the spider. My favorite part: Charlotte wrote words in her web. I liked it because it showed how a friend can help.

Writing only the title and one word for each part instead of a whole sentence.
