About this worksheet

A sentence starter gives a young writer the first few words and leaves the rest for them to imagine. Each item on this page prints a short beginning, such as The little dog, and your child continues it on the lines so that it becomes a complete sentence with a capital letter at the start and an end mark at the finish. There is no one right ending, which is the point: the child decides what happens and adds details such as where, when or how.

Read the starter aloud together, ask what happens next, and encourage your child to say the whole sentence out loud before writing it. Then check for a capital letter, an end mark and a sentence that makes sense.

What your child will learn

  • Complete a sentence from its first words
  • Add details such as where, when and how
  • Start with a capital letter and finish with an end mark
  • Write a sentence that makes sense

Common Core standard: L.2.1.F

Worked example

Starter: The little dog. Finished: The little dog chased a red ball across the yard.

Common mistake

Stopping after a few words, which leaves a fragment instead of a whole sentence.
