    The Lost Mitten

Nora lost her red mitten on the way to school. She looked in her bag and under her desk, but it was gone. At recess she saw a little boy with one red mitten on his hand and one bare, shaking hand. Nora almost said, “That is mine!” Then she looked at his cold fingers. The next day she brought him her other red mitten. “Now you have a pair,” she said.

  2. Why did Nora not say the mitten was hers? Use words from the story.

  3. What kind of person is Nora? Give a reason from the story.

About this worksheet

A reading response is a short piece of writing that answers a question about something you have read. Third graders are expected to share what they think about a story and to back it up with a reason, not just say that they liked it. This worksheet prints a short story and asks your child two questions about it, such as why a character did something or what lesson the story teaches, so a grown-up can check each answer against the text. Your child writes the answer on ruled lines, starting by turning the question into the first words of the answer, then adding the reason.

That habit of restating the question makes every answer a complete sentence that makes sense on its own. Each of the six versions has its own story and its own questions, and the Building Confidence sheet asks about a favorite part or what a character did. The answer key gives a sample answer for every question, but any answer with a clear reason is good.

What your child will learn

  • Turn a question into the start of a full-sentence answer
  • Give a reason for an opinion about a story
  • Name a character, event or detail from a story to support an answer
  • Write several connected sentences on ruled lines

Common Core standard: W.3.10

Worked example

Question: Why did Eli water the plants even though it was raining? Answer: Eli watered the plants even though it was raining because the soil under the leaves was still dry.

Common mistake

Writing only a word or two, such as "the bear", instead of a full sentence that restates the question and gives a reason.

Helpful hint

Start by turning the question into the first words of your answer, then say why.
