About this worksheet

An introduction tells the reader what a report is about and makes them want to keep reading. On this fourth grade worksheet your child reads a report title and three facts, then writes a hook that grabs attention and a topic sentence that names the subject. The facts stay out of the opening so there is something left to say in the paragraphs that follow.

What your child will learn

  • Write a hook that makes a reader curious
  • Name the topic in a topic sentence
  • Save the facts for the paragraphs that follow
  • Write a clear introduction in one or two sentences

Common Core standard: W.4.2.A

Worked example

For a report called "Why Popcorn Pops," a hook could be "Why does a hard little kernel turn into a fluffy snack?" and the topic sentence "Heat and steam make popcorn pop!"

Common mistake

Starting with "This report is about..." or listing every fact in the opening instead of hooking the reader.

Helpful hint

Hook first, then name the topic, and keep the facts for later.
