About this worksheet

For a five-year-old, drawing is a way of thinking, and a picture holds the ideas that the pencil cannot yet write down. This worksheet uses that: one large box to draw in, and then lines to write a sentence about the picture. Each sheet asks about something the child already knows well, such as their family, their house, a pet or a favorite game, and the version picks which. The child draws first, with no pressure, and then says what the picture shows, and then writes it.

At this age the sentence may be short, a few words with the sounds that were heard, and that is exactly right. Ask questions while drawing: Who is in it? What are they doing? Then read the writing back together, touching each word as it is read, so that the child sees that print says what they meant.
