About this worksheet

Correct letter formation helps a kindergartner write clearly without using all of their attention on the pencil. Recognising a letter and producing it are different skills. A child may name R immediately yet begin at the bottom, reverse a stroke, or make the lowercase form the same height as the capital. This worksheet keeps the physical practice brief, then asks children to think about useful start points, first strokes, finishing strokes, and matching uppercase and lowercase forms. Difficulty changes the letters selected: support pages use familiar shapes with fewer movements, while challenge pages include letters with tails, diagonal arms, or direction changes. Watch for a relaxed hand and a consistent top-to-bottom movement rather than perfect penmanship. If a form is difficult, let the child trace it once with a finger, say the movement aloud, and then try it with a pencil. Short accurate practice is more useful than a crowded page of rushed copies.

What your child will learn

  • Begin letters at a useful point
  • Follow strokes in a clear order
  • Match capital and lowercase forms
  • Compare writing with a model

Worked example

For capital T, begin at the top, pull one line down, lift the pencil, and draw a short line across the top.

Common mistake

Starting every letter at the bottom, which makes controlled downward strokes harder.

Helpful hint

Look at where the model begins, then say each short movement as you write.
