A label is the shortest piece of writing there is, and it is the one a preschooler can genuinely finish. The drawing carries the meaning; the word only has to name it. That division of labor is what makes labeling worth doing at three and four: the child gets the experience of print doing a job without having to produce a sentence to get there. Common wobbles are worth expecting. Labels drift to the far corner of the page, where a reader cannot tell what they name. Letters arrive in the right set but the wrong order. Some children write a word that describes an action when the picture wants a name. Each of those is a step, not a failure. On this page the word is traced on a ruled line under a dotted model rather than copied from a word bank, so the letters have somewhere to sit. Accept inventive drawing, and look for one recognizable part with the word placed close enough to point at it.
