About this worksheet

Finishing something someone else started is a small piece of composition. The child has to look at what is already on the page, work out what is absent, and put a mark in a particular place rather than anywhere. That is a different act from free drawing, and it is the one that later becomes adding the missing word to a sentence. On this page a row of pictures has an empty box in it, a line of tiles stops one short, and a scene is given as a model to draw and extend. Preschoolers often decorate instead of completing: they will add a sun and a rainbow before noticing that the row still has a hole in it. Naming what is already there out loud usually fixes that in one pass. Accept rough drawing. A shape that lands in the right box and is roughly the right size has done everything this page asks, and a child who can say why the missing piece belongs has done more.
