About this worksheet

Small letters ask for finer control than capitals, because they are smaller and because they do not all live in the same space. Some sit between the dashed middle line and the baseline, some reach up to the top line, and later a few will drop below. That is why the ruled line on this page has three rules rather than one. A child may recognize a lowercase a perfectly well and still draw only the circle, or turn a u into a v by moving too fast through the curve. Those are motor planning slips, not gaps in alphabet knowledge, and they answer to slowing down rather than to correction. Watch two things while the pencil moves: whether the body of the letter stays short, and whether the finished letter rests on the baseline instead of floating above it. Dots and crossbars go on last, after the main shape, which is easy to say and easy to forget.
