About this worksheet

Writing a numeral is a different job from counting a group, and a child can be fluent at one while the other is still hard. A four-year-old who counts five buttons confidently may still draw the 5 facing backwards, because the hand has to learn a path that the eye already recognizes. The shapes here vary on purpose: 0 is one closed curve, 1 is a single pull down, 7 puts a straight top on a slant, and 10 is two separate symbols that have to be placed side by side in the right order. Numerals are written without a midline because a digit has no short body to sit against — it fills the whole space from the top line to the baseline. Expect reversals; they are ordinary at this age and they fade with practice rather than with correction. Say the movement out loud as the pencil travels, and watch that 10 comes out as a 1 followed by a 0 rather than the other way around.
