About this worksheet

Capitals come first because most of them are built from bold straight lines and big open curves, and because they all sit in one space: top line to baseline, no letter dipping below and none of the height changes that make small letters harder. Knowing a letter by sight does not tell a child how to make it. The hand has to learn where to start, which way to travel, and when to lift for the next stroke. Starting at the top matters more than it looks: it is the habit that later stops b and d from being drawn as circles with sticks added. Expect reversed diagonals, closed curves and strokes added in the wrong order even from a child who can name every letter on the page. Each line here gives dotted models with the pencil's start marked, and leaves the last space blank. Trace one with a finger before the pencil if a shape is hard, and stop while the hand is still comfortable.
