About this worksheet

End punctuation tells a reader how a sentence should sound. A period ends a telling sentence, a question mark ends a question, and an exclamation mark can show a strong feeling. First graders may recognize these marks on a page but still choose one by guessing at the sentence's last word. This worksheet asks children to read the whole complete sentence and decide what the speaker is doing: telling, asking, or showing excitement. They will add a mark, identify why a mark belongs, and compare different endings. The sentences use familiar school and home situations so the language stays easy to understand. Encourage your child to say each sentence aloud three ways—with a calm voice, a questioning voice, and an excited voice. The voice that matches the meaning points to the right end mark and makes punctuation useful rather than decorative.
