About this worksheet

The verbs am, is and are are forms of the verb to be, and they change with the subject: I am, he is, she is, it is, we are, you are and they are. First graders say them correctly most of the time but mix them up when they write, especially with names and plural nouns. On this grade 1 worksheet each line is a sentence with a gap, and your child circles am, is or are.

Singular subjects such as Tom or the dog take is, plural ones such as the books or the kids take are, and I always takes am. Read the sentence out loud with each choice and listen for the one that sounds right.

What your child will learn

  • Use am with I
  • Use is with one person or thing
  • Use are with more than one, with we and with you
